tURKISH COAST

As Curated by Voyager Voice, Begüm Khan

What I love about Bodrum is how it feels both hidden and secretive, and open and inviting at the same time. I remember my grandparents’ summer house where we spend our holidays as kids. We’d wake up, put on our swimsuits, and spend the entire day swimming, playing tennis, and running around. Bodrum is filled with memories of family and childhood friends, of the easy-living, of the best summers.

In today’s Bodrum, I still wake up and immediately put on a swimsuit. What I love now is that Bodrum feels like an extension of Istanbul. Everyone I know from Istanbul spends their summer in Bodrum, you don't even have to ask —we have become one large community. There's no need to ask who's in town, you already know. For the past two summers, we’ve also opened a pop-up Begüm Khan boutique in Bodrum, so I’ve been visiting more frequently. What I find truly remarkable about Bodrum is how it is still authentic and local, yet it has evolved into a luxurious, international destination.

WHERE TO STAY...

I’ve been staying at Maçakizi - a Bodrum classic -  for years, and I love it because it feels like staying at my relative’s house with family and friends. It’s very cozy, just makes me feel like home. You can enjoy beautiful sunsets at the deck or walk easily to Türkbükü for a night stroll & ice-cream.

This year, I’m fond of Maxx Royal Bodrum Resort, where we also opened a boutique. It’s the perfect blend of elegance and comfort, capturing the essence of the luxury Mediterranean experience.

One of my favourite retreats for relaxation and recharging is Six Senses Kaplankaya, a place with stunning views and a truly rejuvenating atmosphere.

When I need a quick escape from the city, we head to Çeşme. Another place that feels like home to me is the Alavya Hotel, I love the convenience of its location. The cool Aegean waters are refreshing, and there's always the option to relax by their beautiful pool.

And, of course, I can't forget D-Maris, where you truly have it all at your fingertips and is next to our place. The long, turquoise beaches are simply breathtaking. I also appreciate the diverse international cuisine and lively atmosphere, from Manos to La Guérite to Zuma. Plus, it’s an excellent spot for families with kids.

WHere to eat…

Ritmo Zeytino in Yalikavak, launched by friends of mine from Istanbul who also run the amazing Arkestra, is a must-visit for food enthusiasts, offering the perfect setting for dining amidst the trees. A local favourite, Lucca by the Sea, is the ideal spot for a laid-back supper and a lively night out.

When I’m at our summer house in Bozburun and want to eat somewhere special I go to Manzara Sögüt, It’s a hidden gem with stunning views. It’s a perfect spot for those laid-back Mediterranean vibes, fresh seafood that melts in your mouth, and the kind of sunset that makes you forget time exists. Whether you’re up for a chill dinner or just grabbing drinks while the sun goes down, this place is pure magic. Trust me, you won’t want to leave!

When I'm in Çeşme, I love dining at Asma Yapragi, where you can enjoy delicious local cuisine, a cozy garden under the stars, and a glass of Rakı (the lion’s milk).

If you're craving seafood, Horasan Balık is a must-visit for the freshest and most flavourful Mediterranean dishes.

OD Urla, a Michelin-star restaurant, is one of my favourites. The food, the cocktails and service are exceptional and worth the extra drive.

WHat to do…

For the days you want to chill in the company of art & books, I would highly recommend Zai. If you are looking for a breezy speakeasy bar, Kavanoz is a great option. I also love watching the Turkish schooners sailing around romantically.

Discovering the hidden bays of the turquoise coast by boat is a must, as is exploring the ancient mysteries of Ephesus. One of my favourite sailing routes starts in Bozburun, an untouched and mystical spot on the Turquoise Coast. I often sail to Symi for a night of celebrations and then return because Bozburun is my happy place.

Another highlight is Bozukkale, a little-known spot between Bozburun and Bodrum that feels like a well-kept secret. Finally, sailing into Bodrum itself offers all the glamour and excitement you'd expect.

WHERE TO SHOP…

My first stop would be Maxx Royal Bodrum’s boutique area, where we have our flagship Begüm Khan boutique and also other great Turkish brands such as Vakko Mare and Bluemint. For luxury shopping, Beymen at Yalıkavak Marina is my go-to spot. If you're into discovering local & international designers all in one place '74 Escape shop inside Maçakızı is the perfect place. The Scorpios Bodrum boutique also stands out with its excellent mix of brands, that perfectly complement the Scorpios vibe. Yalıkavak Marina offers a diverse range of options, from restaurants and ice cream shops to both local and big-name brands.

I hope you all come to the Turkish coasts next summer.
